Mission

The mission of the AP Good Shepherd Program is to provide evidence-based after-school learning support for students with special educational needs.

The AP Good Shepherd Program serves as a professional training platform dedicated to training university students and graduates to understand the challenges faced by students with special educational needs and the specific teaching methods required. Under the supervision of educational psychologists, it offers after-school learning support for these students.

Origin:

The name "Good Shepherd" is derived from Christian ideology, symbolizing the nurturing of lost sheep.

Goals

The AP Good Shepherd Program aims to provide comprehensive support for students with special learning needs, creating an environment conducive to their learning and development.

Overview of Executive Function

Executive Function is directed by the prefrontal cortex of the brain, responsible for controlling behavior and thought processes. It enables us to work according to plans and achieve goals. Research shows that a child's executive function is a more accurate predictor of future success than IQ (Intelligence Quotient). Importantly, it can be enhanced through systematic training. Studies also indicate that improved executive function can be applied broadly across areas such as learning ability, emotional regulation, social skills, and daily life management.

About Us

  • Educational Psychologists
  • Speech Therapists
  • Counselors

We utilize the "AP Good Shepherd Training Curriculum" developed by a university research team, based on psychological theories and evidence-based practices. The curriculum is taught by qualified instructors (such as registered social workers/counselors) and combines experiential learning with storytelling elements to effectively enhance the executive function of students with special learning needs. Each course unit is equipped with necessary activity materials, worksheets, tools, and reward programs.

Service Scope

In the 2023-24 academic year, the program enters its second phase, providing a new strength-based approach support service for students with special learning needs. We utilize a diverse range of topics within the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) framework to identify students' strengths across various fields and enhance their learning management and emotional management skills.

This second phase of the program includes two main courses: Learning Management and Emotional Management.

The Learning Management course covers topics such as improving focus, goal setting, planning, time management, and flexible thinking. For example, in the "Goal Setting" unit, students not only get the opportunity to understand the importance of good planning through activities like building a model airplane, but instructors also introduce the necessary principles and practical skills of effective planning in the first half of the lesson, allowing students with special learning needs to further practice and apply the theories learned.

The Emotional Management course teaches skills such as fostering a growth mindset, mindfulness training, and delayed gratification. It also incorporates artistic expression and creative methods, such as fluid painting and chalk pastel art, to help students recognize their emotions and explore suitable strategies for self-regulation and expression. The program provides comprehensive support, which includes assistance for parents and teachers through lectures, group training, and individual learning plans.

Outcome

The Vine began offering a variety of support services in 2023, including group training, parent lectures, and teacher training.

From January 2023 to June 2024, The Vine Limited:

  1. Served over 20 schools
  2. Held lectures and workshops for over 500 students/parents/teachers
  3. Established 32 executive function training groups, serving nearly 200 students

The program is divided into two phases. In the first phase (2020-2023 academic year), nearly 500 tertiary students were trained to support approximately 1,000 primary school students with varying degrees of special learning needs across 59 primary schools in Hong Kong. This initiative aimed to alleviate the impact of the pandemic on these students' learning and had been well received by parents and schools.
